Tincture Guide
What are mushroom tinctures?
A mushroom tincture is a potent liquid extract that is created by soaking mushrooms in typically water and/or alcohol. The process of soaking a mushroom in a liquid is known as maceration. During the maceration the mushrooms are broken down, drawing out all the beneficial compounds.
Once the beneficial compounds have been released, you are left with a potent liquid extract that can be consumed sublingually or orally. They can be added to any hot or cold beverage or, more traditionally, dropped directly under the tongue for quicker absorption.
Overall mushroom tinctures provide a simple, convenient, and highly effective method of harnessing the healing properties of mushrooms.
Why tinctures?
If you're debating whether capsule, powder or tincture is best for you - this may help!
Easy to add to your routine
Functional mushroom tinctures are an easy and convenient way to incorporate the benefits of mushrooms into your daily routine. Tincures can be added to your morning coffee, smoothie, or simply dropped under the tongue!
Potent and Bioavailable
Tinctures are incredibly bioavailable, meaning the amount of mushroom that the body can absorb in each dose is very high. With powders and capsules, the actual amount of medicinal benefits absorbed is much lower. Furthermore, tinctures are absorbed by the body excellently making them great value and very effective.
Easy to swallow and digest
Let's be honest - capsules are not pleasant to consume and powders take time and effort. At Mogo Farm tincture can be added to our favourite drink, soup, smoothie, salad, etc. making it a tasty supplement indeed.
Health should be enjoyed so let's make it so!
No mess and minimal clean up
One advantage of using tinctures is their ease of use compared to powders. Measuring powders can be messy and time-consuming, requiring more effort to mix into beverages. On the other hand, tinctures integrate effortlessly into any drink with minimal effort.
Shelf life & potency
Mogo Farm tinctures preserve themselves naturally. Both our 50ml and 100ml bottles are made of amber glass that blocks UV light extending the shelf life. If kept below 25 degrees Celsius your tincture can last for years! The potency of a tincture does not degrade over time like powders and capsules, meaning you can enjoy the medicinal benefits for a long time.
What makes a potent mushroom tincture?
There are many tinctures out there that are far from potent and far from effective. A good tincture must have:
- Fruiting body only (No mycelium)
- Dual extracted (Using alcohol and water)
- 1:3 ratio (1 part mushroom to 3 parts liquid)
- Traditionally extracted (Using maceration technique)
- High quality mushrooms (UK sourced)
- No preservatives or additives used
We mastered the craft of making potent tinctures a long time ago.
Benefits of mushroom tinctures
Each mushroom serves a different function. Some are great for cognitive health, some help with relaxation and sleep, while others are great to maintain a healthy biome and overall wellbeing!
Why is extraction neccessary?
Functional mushrooms contain various bioactive and therapeutic compounds. These compounds however, are enclosed within the mushroom’s cell wall. This cell wall is composed of chitin (kai·tn), a robust substance also found in the hard shells of crabs, lobsters, and insects. Since the human body cannot digest chitin, an extraction process is essential to release the beneficial compounds from within the cell wall.
Most mushroom supplements on the market do not specify whether the mushroom was extracted with both water and alcohol making them highly ineffective. The good news is, with our tinctures you can be sure of very high potency and effectiveness.
What makes a great mushroom supplement?
When considering mushroom supplements in any form, be it tinctures, capsules or powder there are a few things to look out for.
How we make our tinctures?
When it comes to making tinctures we stick to a tried and proved method of extraction. Due to our rigorous attention to detail and onsite chemists and experts we can proudly state we do not need to add any preservatives or additives. Our tinctures are pure, potent and highly effective.
Step 1
We only use the mushroom fruiting body and no mycelium and use large dehydrators set to the perfect temperature to remove all water content from our mushrooms. Once dry we grind them down to a powder to maximise the surface area ready for extraction.
Step 2
We soak our mushrooms in premium quality alcohol leaving them to macerate for 40 days. This is ample time to draw out all the alcohol soluble beneficial compounds. We then complete a water extraction by heating the mushrooms in water for 12 hours to slowly release all the water soluble compounds.
Step 3
Once complete we combine both the water and alcohol extracts creating a dual extracted tincture that is exceptionally potent and highly concentrated.
Where do we source our mushrooms?
At Mogo Farm, we grow our own Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps. We also collaborate with local Lion’s Mane farmers to ensure ample supply. Our Turkey Tail and Birch Polypore are foraged from low-pollution areas in Derbyshire and the Scottish Highlands. Expert Chaga pickers source our Chaga sustainably from the Scottish Highlands, with occasional sourcing from Siberia to ensure sustainability. For Shiitake and Reishi, we work with local specialists who provide optimal growing conditions, ensuring the shortest supply chains and the highest quality mushrooms.
