This is a topic we’ve been seeing more and more of lately. It’s not usually our style to call out trends or critique other products in the mushroom space. That’s not part of our ethos - we respect that people have different needs and preferences.
That said, each week, we receive messages from our community: thoughtful questions and curious enquiries, but recently there have been more concerns. Concerns regarding mushroom gummies. Just last week alone, over 12 customers messaged us saying they were disappointed with gummies and wanted to switch to a more effective option. Their issues ranged from long, confusing ingredient lists to surprisingly high costs and lack of noticeable benefit.
So we did what we always do: we listened, and we researched.
Our team visited both national and independent health shops, browsed online platforms, and purchased a variety of mushroom gummy products to trial them firsthand. We examined their pricing, ingredient quality, extraction methods, and real-world usability. And while we’re not here to say gummies are terrible and tinctures are perfect, we do want to share our honest findings - backed by facts and guided by our genuine concern for mushroom products on the market.
Ingredients: The Hidden Costs of Taste and Texture
Let’s start with the ingredients list. We have found that many gummies contain more than just mushrooms. A typical label often includes:
-
Added sugars, glucose syrup or sweeteners
-
Palm oil or rapeseed oil
-
Gelatin or gelling agents
-
Natural or artificial flavourings
-
Colouring agents
-
Starch-based binders and preservatives
These ingredients are necessary to create a chewy, sweet product - but they don't contribute to your health. In fact, they could undermine it, especially if you’re trying to reduce sugar intake or avoid inflammatory oils. Many customers told us they didn’t even realise palm oil was in their supplement until after they bought it.
By contrast, a well-made tincture (particularly alcohol-extracted) typically includes just:
-
Fruiting body mushrooms only (no mycelium or grain)
-
Purified water
-
Alcohol (to aid extraction and preservation)
That’s it. Clean, effective, and with no unnecessary extras. We do appreciate alcohol is not for everyone (even if it is 0.04 units per 2ml for example). There are many powders and capsules out there which are properly extracted and of good quality- you just need to know what to look for!
Dosage & Pricing: Where Things Don’t Add Up
When we looked into the pricing of mushroom gummies, we were genuinely shocked. A typical product costs between £19.99 and £37.99 for a jar of 60 gummies. But dosage instructions are varied:
-
Most commonly: 2 gummies per day
-
Some brands: 4 gummies per day
That means a bottle could last just 15 days - this could be costing you a minimum of £40.00 a month! We also found instances where the same brand and mushroom type offered vastly different levels of potency depending on whether you bought it directly from their site or through a national chain. In short: you might be paying full price for a product that delivers half the quality.
We understand this confusion. The supplement space can be a minefield, and mushroom products are no exception. Transparency isn’t always there - but it should be.
Extraction & Bioavailability: What You Absorb Matters Most
Here’s a crucial but often overlooked detail: mushrooms contain compounds like beta-glucans, terpenoids and hericenones, all trapped within tough cell walls made of chitin. Our digestive system alone can’t fully unlock them.
Proper extraction is essential. Dual extraction (hot water + alcohol) breaks down the chitin and releases both the water and alcohol soluble compounds, giving your body access to their benefits.
Many gummies use mushroom powders or mycelium-on-grain biomass, neither of which are necessarily extracted. Without this process, your body may absorb very little of their beneficial compounds. In effect, you may be paying for sugar, flavour, and a label.
Scientific literature supports this. Sublingual delivery of tinctures (under the tongue) offers faster, more effective absorption through the salivary glands. Bioavailability is higher, especially when paired with a juice, milky coffee, smoothie or a protein shake.
Ease of Use and Real-World Observations
Gummies are undeniably convenient. The majority of them taste good, are easy to grab, and can be taken on the go. But during our testing, we noticed a few drawbacks:
-
Moisture exposure caused gummies to clump and stick together
-
Packaging was often large, plastic heavy, and not environmentally friendly
-
Dosing accuracy was fixed, with no easy way to adjust
Tinctures, on the other hand, typically come in glass dropper bottles with measured pipettes, offering precise and adjustable dosing. They can be taken sublingually or added to drinks. Yes, they can spill or break if dropped, but they hold up better in terms of longevity, portability and sustainability.
Personally, our primary focus is extracting the beneficial compounds and not taste. We want to offer our customers a highly effective, potent and natural tincture.
A Word Of Caution: Fake Clinical Review Sites
During our research, we encountered several polished looking web pages claiming to rank the “Top 5 Mushroom Supplements” and giving the impression it’s supported by clinical reviews. On closer inspection, many of these were sponsored content platforms owned or influenced by a single brand. It wasn’t until we reached the very bottom of the page and saw a small disclaimer in the footer.
These websites and web pages are designed to look like independent, scientific reviews - but they’re often marketing in disguise.
At Mogo Farm, we pride ourselves on real reviews from real customers. None of our reviews have been endorsed or sponsored. Integrity matters.
Final Thoughts
Let’s be clear: this isn’t an attack on mushroom gummies. For some, they might be a convenient introduction to the world of mushrooms. But we believe that mushrooms deserve more than just trend treatment. They are powerful, intelligent, natural allies with the potential to improve real human wellbeing - if respected and prepared properly.
What we are saying is:
-
Be informed
-
Ask questions
-
Look beyond flavour and form
-
Understand where your supplement comes from and what’s in it
Whether it’s a gummy, powder, or tincture, we believe you deserve clarity, quality, and efficacy.
Thank you to everyone who reached out and shared their stories. We’ll always be here to support your journey with mushrooms - with honesty, curiosity, and care.
